A resilient Swampy Cree Nation rooted in the lands and waters of Cedar Lake, Manitoba
Chemawawin: The name Chemawawin comes from the Cree word meaning "fishing with a hook," reflecting the Nation's deep connection to the waters of Cedar Lake. The community is located in Easterville, Manitoba, and is a signatory to Treaty 5 (1875).
History: The original community of Chemawawin was located at The Pas area but was relocated in the 1960s due to the construction of the Grand Rapids Hydroelectric Dam, which flooded their ancestral lands. The community was reestablished at Easterville on Cedar Lake.
Population: Chemawawin Cree Nation has approximately 2,000 registered members, with a significant portion residing on reserve in Easterville.
Location: Situated on the southeastern shore of Cedar Lake in central Manitoba, approximately 400 km north of Winnipeg. The community is accessible by Highway 327 and is surrounded by the natural beauty of boreal forests and pristine waterways.
Culture: The Nation maintains strong Swampy Cree (Muskego) traditions, language, and cultural practices. Fishing, hunting, and trapping remain integral to community life, alongside efforts to revitalize the Cree language for future generations.
